It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald Monwell Porter, who departed this world on July 6, 2026. Known to family and friends as Ronnie or Ron, he was a loving brother, uncle, father, loyal friend, and proud Washingtonian whose life was defined by courage, service, and an unwavering commitment to others.

Ron graduated from Coolidge High School in 1965 and remained actively engaged with his classmates and alumni community throughout the years, valuing the lifelong friendships he built there. A decorated Vietnam War veteran and proud Purple Heart recipient, Ron served honorably with the 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division, the legendary "Big Red One," known as the "Black Lions." His bravery, resilience, and steadfast patriotism reflected a life of extraordinary sacrifice and dedication to his country—qualities that will forever be remembered and honored.

Following his military service, Ron devoted many years to the District of Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation, where he faithfully served the citizens of Washington, D.C. Through his work, he mentored, encouraged, and inspired generations of people, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives throughout the community. Ron found joy in life's simple pleasures. He was an avid reader, rarely missed an episode of Jeopardy!, and had a deep appreciation for Broadway musicals. Of all the places he traveled, Hawaii held a special place in his heart and remained his favorite destination.

Above all, Ron will be remembered for his fearless spirit, bold strength, generous heart, and unwavering loyalty to his family and friends. He treasured lifelong relationships, especially those shared with his beloved "Lunch Bunch" crew, whose friendship brought him immeasurable joy over the decades.

Ron leaves behind a legacy of honor, compassion, service, and enduring love. His life touched countless people, and his memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Graveside Service

A graveside service with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. Service details will be announced once they have been confirmed.

Family and friends are invited to join in honoring Ronald's remarkable life, his dedicated service to his country, and his lifelong commitment to his community.
