Matthew Lacey Obituary

Matthew James Lacey, beloved brother and uncle, passed away on May 3, 2025, in Baltimore County, Maryland, at the age of 69.

Matt proudly served his country as a U.S. Army Green Beret. During his military service, he was stationed in Germany and played on the Army basketball team. He took great pride in serving his country and carried that same sense of loyalty and strength throughout his life.

He was an easygoing man — the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back. Matt genuinely cared more about others than himself. He had a generous spirit, a big heart, and always made people feel welcomed, valued, and loved.

Matt found joy in the simple things: fishing, playing cards with his brothers and nephews, and laughing with children. He was especially close to his great-nephew, Austen Babcock. When Austen passed away six years ago at the age of 25, it broke Matt’s heart. Their bond was incredibly strong, and in the darkest moments of grief, Matt was there — holding his niece April’s hand, offering comfort when she needed it most.

Matt was also a passionate sports fan who loved rooting for Maryland and Baltimore teams. Whether cheering on the Ravens, Orioles, or Terps, he never missed a game and wore his hometown pride proudly.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Thomas Lacey and Michael Lacey, as well as his great-nephew Austen Babcock, with whom he shared a very special bond.

He is survived by his siblings: Pamela Lacey, Laura Robinson, Rebecca Coleman, Jacob Lacey, Adam Lacey, Missy Lacey, Joshua Lacey, and Albie Lacey. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews: Arthur Babcock, David Robinson, Wendy Morgan, April Babcock, Adam Coleman, Andrew Coleman, Joanna Johnson, Tabitha McAbee, Phillips Coleman, David Coleman, Mary Smith, Esther Driver, Steven Coleman, James Coleman and Julia Coleman; and great-nieces and nephews: Ambur Russell, Aaden Sparks, Scott Babcock, Troy Babcock, Zyle Babcock, Chris Rosencrans, Payton Rosencrans, Jayden Robinson, and Jared Robinson.

Though not religious, the quiet symbolism of the date he passed — 5/3 — along with his name and the verse Matthew 5:3: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven,” feels like a fitting echo of a life that, while humble, left a deep and lasting impact.

Per his wishes, Matt will be cremated, and no formal service will be held. He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and unwavering love for his family.
