Justin Kent DeLoatch Sr. was born on May 7, 1955, in Washington, DC, to the union of John Henry DeLoatch Sr. and Vader Ann Watson-DeLoatch.
Affectionately known as Kent by family and friends, he was raised in Washington, DC, where he was educated in the DC public school system and later attended various trade programs. Over the years, Kent held several jobs, eventually becoming a Forklift Operator for Giant Food Warehouse, where he proudly retired.
Retirement didn’t slow him down. Kent went on to start his own company offering landscaping, snow removal, home repairs, and painting services—work he truly enjoyed. Even in recent years, he could often be found helping out at the bus yard, a place he appreciated not only for the work but for the relationships he had with the bus staff.
Kent was always on the move. No matter the weather—hot or cold—he’d often say, “I’m just gonna walk.” He had a deep love for the outdoors, cherished family gatherings, good music, sweets, and a lively cookout. On quieter days, you could catch him fiddling with his bass guitar or listening to what he called “that good music.”
He especially loved Frankie Beverly and Maze, never shy about singing or dancing—often loudly and joyfully. Western movies and country music were also favorites, with “Gunsmoke” holding a special place in his heart.
Kent was a genuine and kindhearted soul, always ready to lend a hand. His humility, humor, and love for life made him deeply loved by all who knew him. Kent lived life on his own terms—loving hard, playing harder, and cherishing his family beyond measure.
Kent entered into eternal rest peacefully on April 29, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Sr. and Vader Ann Watson-DeLoatch, his sister Shirley DeLoatch, his niece Kentresa Riley, and great-nephew Antwan DeLoatch.
He leaves to mourn his passing:
His two beloved children, De’Angelia DeLoatch-Dunaway and Justin DeLoatch Jr.; son-in-law, Ivan Dunaway; sisters, Evelyn, Vader J., Theresa, and Virginia (Jenny); brother, John Henry DeLoatch Jr.; brothers-in-law, Alfred Glover and William Spencer III; and his devoted significant other, Jackie Shaw.
He is also survived by Beritta White-DeLoatch, bonus children, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and many dear friends—including Mr. Dave and all of his beloved bus yard family.
