In Loving Memory of Eileen Braxton
Eileen Braxton was born Eileen Lalite (Rela) on October 3rd, 1949 in St. James, Grenada. Eileen was the daughter of Wellington and Teresa Lalite. Eileen was one of fourteen, (14) children, six (6) girls and eight (8) boys. After graduating high school in Grenada, Eileen traveled to the United Kingdom to pursue higher education. While in the United Kingdom, she met and married Larry Braxton. Their marriage created their beautiful daughter, Michelle D. Braxton. The family later moved to the United States, where Eileen proudly became a naturalized citizen in 1978. Eileen spent part of her life as a dedicated military wife (USMC) and forever as a devoted and loving mother.
Eileen is preceded in death by her parents: Teresa (mother), Wellington (father), and siblings (Ruby, Aiden, and Doreen). She is survived by her daughter: Michelle Braxton, twin granddaughters: Dejia Davis (Markus Davis) and Destini Braxton , and great grandchildren: Audrey, Elijah, Joseph, Judah, Micah, and Isaiah (expected November 2025). She is also survived by siblings (10), Chris Smith, Charles Jenkins, and many other loved ones.
Eileen loved to cook Caribbean dishes for Michelle, granddaughters and their friends because she loved to ensure that their Caribbean heritage was not lost. When Michelle was pregnant Eileen enjoyed cooking everyday for her to make sure Michelle and her grandkids were eating healthy. Whenever Michelle was in the hospital Eileen made sure to cook because she didnt like hospital food. Eileen (“gramie”) took an early retirement so she could watch Destini and Dejia instead of sending them to daycare because she felt like she could be the best caretaker for them.
As a grandmother, there was nothing that stopped Eileen from making sure her granddaughters and great-grandkids had the world and more. When Destini had Elijah , on Eileen’s birthday (October 3rd), Eileen immediately packed up and moved from Florida to come live with her while she raised Elijah for the first year of his life. During the final months of Eileen’s life, Dejia and Michelle assumed the role of primary caregivers for her and would help clean her apartment, take her to doctor appointments, and would make sure she went to her favorite places (Kohls and Panera).
Eileen’s last holiday together (Mother’s Day) with family was spent celebrating her and giving back the love that she poured into Michelle, Dejia, and Destini. The week leading up to Eileen’s journey to Heaven, she was surrounded by her family. Her last memory that she voiced to her family in the hospital was of her and her loved ones attending Charles’ surprise 50th birthday dinner. A day later, on July 24th, Eileen peacefully transitioned to Heaven and transformed from Michelle, Dejia, and Destini’s Earthside angel to their Heavenly angel. She spent her final moments in the presence of Michelle and Chris before she took her last breath Thursday morning. While, Eileen was the first to hold Michelle, welcome her into this world, and witness Michelle’s first breath, Michelle — with the strength of God— was the last to hold Eileen, witness Eileen’s last breath, and watched God welcome her into Heaven.
Eileen was a devoted mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, loving sister, and loyal friend whose warmth, strength, and grace touched all who knew her. Her legacy of love, faith, and compassion will continue to inspire her family and friends for generations to come.
