It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Diane Free Ray, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who left us peacefully in her sleep on May 11, 2025. Diane was born on March 28, 1950, in Washington DC where she was raised and educated in the public school system. Her love for the city and its vibrant culture was evident in everything she did.
Diane was an exceptional food inspector for over 25 years. She had a special talent for bringing people together through her cooking. Whether it was her renowned rabbit with gravy or her delicious seafood salad Diane kitchen was always filled with warmth, laughter and the enticing aromas of her signature dishes.
She had a playful spirit, and Diane adored her niece Keisha, who was known for her mischievous pranks. Their bond was a source of endless laughter and cherished memories. Diane passion for food and her dedication to ensuring the safety and quality of what we eat were just a few of the many ways she made a difference in the lives of those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter.
Diane will be deeply missed. Diane is proceeding in death by her mother Ellnorse Free and father Roy Free Sr, two brothers Donnie Free and Roy Free Jr and ex husband Lawrence Ray Sr. Diane is survived by two sons Lawrence Ray Jr., Don Deago Ray, two granddaughters Ajah Dunbar and Jordan, one daughter in law Melody, a host of nieces and nephews, and friends. Rest in peace dear Diane. Your spirit you will forever live on in our hearts.
