Benjamin Alejandro Merino, 80 years old, of Hyattsville, Maryland found peace March 31, 2025. Born in El Salvador, Benjamin came to America in the 1960s on a work visa. Little did he know that his whole life would be transformed by his desire for a better life. While working as an apprentice electrician in Washington, D.C. he met the love of his life, Flocela Rosales. She came from Mexico to pursue her dream of becoming a flight attendant. Benjamin and Flocela fell in love, married, and started a family. They were blessed with two amazing children, Carlos and Sandra. The family spent twenty-five wonderful years in Adams Morgan enjoying museums, parks, and diverse city life. Summers afforded exciting family trips to Virginia Beach.
His family moved to Hyattsville in the late 1980s and have enjoyed the close-knit community. Benjamin loved the quiet suburban atmosphere, walking in his neighborhood, and watching soccer. He was thrilled that their new home was close to The University of Maryland College Park where his daughter, Sandra, has excelled in architecture design and construction.
Benjamin studied diligently with his children in order to become a United States citizen. He was extraordinarily proud to become part of his new country. His young children helped him accomplish this goal and took great pride in their contributions to his success. Benjamin was very pleased when his son, Carlos, joined the Army as an Apache pilot. He was even more proud when his youngest grandson, Brandon, joined the military as he currently trains to be an aircraft mechanic. He was so very happy and proud that his family is active in the protection and defense of his country.
Benjamin is survived by his beloved wife, Flocela; wonderful children, Carlos (Virginia) and Sandra; and eight incredible grandchildren, Gaelen, William, Thomas, Diego, Michael, Samantha, Jesus, and Brandon. He will be missed and lovingly remembered as a true example of the American dream. His hard work and dedication led him to find a much-loved home, a beautiful family, and a revered country.
